Age-adjusted death rates were calculated as deaths per 100,000 population using the direct method and the 2000 standard population. Opioid overdose deaths as defined, that have T40.1 (Heroin), T40.2 (Natural and semi-synthetic opioids), T40.3 (Methadone), T40.4 (Other synthetic narcotics), T40.6 (Other and unspecified narcotics) as a contributing cause. Opioid overdose deaths are identified using underlying cause-of-death codes X40–X44, X60–X64, X85, and Y10–Y14.
